News Review: Ancient stellar collision makes waves

source: BBC Learning English     2017年10月17日
The story:
The collision of two dead stars has been watched for the first time by an international team of researchers. The event gave off gravitational waves, ripples in space and time that were first predicted by Albert Einstein.
The collision happened 130 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but its light and waves have only now reached us. One researcher described it as the first full picture of one of the most violent, cataclysmic events in the universe.

Key words and phrases:
sparking: causing to begin
ripple: small wave(s) of something
comb through: examine thoroughly

The Present Perfect Tense | English Grammar Lesson

source: mmmEnglish    2017年9月12日
This lesson is an overview of the present perfect tense
What it looks like, how to use it and when to use it!
Read the full transcript: https://www.mmmenglish.com/2017/09/13...

Structure:
Subject + have/has + main verb (past participle form)

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

When using the present perfect tense, you need an auxiliary verb that helps your main verb to function.
In the perfect tenses, the verb (to) have is always the auxiliary verb.
In the present perfect tense, the main verb is in the past participle form.
This is not difficult for regular past tense verbs. For regular verbs, the past participle form of the verb is the same as the past tense verb, so you just add -ed!
But irregular verbs are different and the only way to learn the past participle form is to learn them individually.

Past simple or present perfect tense?
To answer this question you need to think about time. Finished time and unfinished time.
Think about ‘last week’. That’s a good example of finished time. Last week is finished, it’s over.
Yesterday, last week, last month, last year, 1991 - these are all examples of finished time… Time that is complete.
What about ‘this week’? Is this week finished? No! Not yet. That is an example of unfinished time. There’s still more of this week to come. It’s not finished yet.
When you are talking about a time period that has finished, use the past simple.
When you are talking about a time period that is unfinished… Like today, this week, this month, this year, use the present perfect.

FINALLY, AT LAST, LASTLY and IN THE END | English words

Finally, at last, lastly and in the end are confusing words for English learners. These words and phrases are similar. But the meaning and use is in fact slightly different. Let's look at each one in more detail.

finally
Use 1: "finally" presents the last element of a series or list.
Example sentence:
Mark: What do we need from the supermarket?
Jane: We need coffee, milk, sugar and finally, a packet of biscuits.

Use 2: We use "finally" to express that one has been waiting a long time for something.
The bus finally arrived at midnight.

“finally” goes in the middle position of a sentence:
If the sentence has a main verb, then we put "finally" before the main verb.
If the sentence has an auxiliary or modal verb, then we put "finally" after the auxiliary / modal verb and before the main verb.
If the sentence has the verb "be" as a main verb (a linking verb), then we put "finally" after the verb “be”.

at last
“at last” also expresses that one has been waiting a long time for something.
“at last” strongly expresses impatience or inconvenience at the long wait.
Example: We have at last sold our car.
Position in a sentence:
We can put "at last" at the beginning or end or in the middle position as defined above.

lastly
"lastly" describes something that comes at the end of a series or list.
(This is the same as use 1 of "finally" as described above.)

You can use the practice text for a dictation, a gapped text, or other form of classroom practice. For your convenience, here is the text you can copy and paste into a Word document.

TEXT:
School can seem like a play where someone hands you a part. Many of us wish we could pick another character. Don’t believe me? If you could listen in on our thoughts, you’d know the truth.

“I’m the popular one. Everyone knows when I enter a room. People pay attention to what I wear, what I say, and what I do. But sometimes the attention is too much. I wonder if I’m being the real me.”

“I’m the smart one, the one the teachers love. Everyone expects me to deliver only the best results. I’ve come to expect the same. What if one day I didn’t?”

“I’m the football player, the basketball player, and the baseball player. I don’t remember deciding to make sports my life. It just happened. I have this memory of me planting flowers with my mother. I love sports, but…well, I think, ‘Where did that boy in the garden go?’”

“I’m the quiet one they don’t notice. I think the teachers don’t always see me either. But I observe everything. I store a lot of thoughts in my head. If I stood up on a desk and shouted, would anyone hear me? Would they listen?”

We all play our part. It’s one big performance, but who are we performing for? Can I leave the stage? I’d rather write my own story. Give me a pencil and paper.
