Lesson 31: Can you help me find a few things?
Matt : I can't find my glasses and I can't see anything. Can you help me find a few things?
Anna : No problem. What are you looking for?
Matt : My laptop, do you see it?
Anna : Yes, your laptop is on the chair.
Matt : Where's my book?
Anna : Which one?
Matt : The dictionary.
Anna : It's under the table.
Matt : Where's my pencil?
Anna : There's a pencil in front of the lamp.
Matt : That's not a pencil. That's a pen.
Anna : Oh, sorry. There is a pencil behind the cup.
Matt : How about my backpack? Do you know where that is?
Anna : It's in between the wall and the bed.
Matt : Where are my shoes?
Anna : They're on the left side of the TV.
Matt : I don't see them.

BBC 6 Minute English | CHRISTMAS KINDNESS
source: Daily Listening 2016年9月15日
► SUBSCRIBE DAILY LISTENING: http://goo.gl/9sRkEB
For many children, Christmas is the most exciting time of the year when they look forward to all the presents Santa Claus will bring. But for families who struggle to buy food they can’t afford presents for Christmas day. Neil and Alice discuss how some charities are helping these families in need.
0:04 Did you get all your Christmas shopping done, Alice?
0:06 I did, Neil.
0:08 And I spent a small fortune – and that means a lot of money!
0:12 Well, I hate buying all those presents that people just don't really want.
0:16 Oh, Neil, you grumpy old Scrooge!
0:20 And I hope you realise that the subject of today's show is Christmas kindness!
0:24 Oh dear.
0:25 I might be grumpy – and that means bad-tempered – but I'm not a scrooge!
0:29 I don't mind spending money – I just don't know what to buy people.
0:34 Ebenezer Scrooge is the main character in Charles Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol.
0:39 He's a miser – and that means someone who loves money but hates spending it.
0:44 Indeed.
0:45 Well, on the subject of A Christmas Carol, Neil, at the end of the story, what does Scrooge
0:51 buy the Cratchit family for Christmas dinner?
0:54 Is it… a) a goose?
0:57 b) a turkey?
0:59 Or c) a chicken?
1:02 Hmm.
1:03 Well, I haven't read the book so I'm going to guess a) a goose.
1:06 Well, we'll find out later if you chose the right answer.
1:10 Now, Neil, I agree that Christmas shopping can sometimes feel pointless – but we mustn't
1:16 forget what a magical time Christmas is for young children.
1:19 Well, that's true.
1:20 I remember how hard it was to get to sleep on Christmas Eve – worrying that Santa Claus
1:25 would get stuck in our chimney.
1:27 Yes, well, eve means the day before something – in this case, Christmas Day.
1:33 Parents tell their children that Santa Claus – an imaginary old man with a white beard
1:37 and red clothes – will bring them presents at Christmas time.
1:41 In the UK children believe that Santa comes down the chimney to get into the house.
1:45 But it's not all fun.
1:48 Increasing numbers of people these days are struggling for money at this time of year.
1:52 Having enough food to feed their family is what matters most and buying presents comes
1:57 further down the list.
1:58 So let's listen now to a BBC Scotland report by Laura Maxwell.
2:02 She's talking about a special event with lots of presents.
2:06 LM: Beatrice Cadell has just celebrated her 80th birthday.
2:12 And instead of presents for her, she asked her friends to buy toys.
2:15 BC: Everyone that turned up to that birthday do was absolutely brilliant.
2:22 Absolutely brilliant.
2:23 And it's good for something like this.
2:28 It's even better.
2:29 It's even better – you know – somebody else can benefit.
2:33 We don't need it.
2:35 We're old.
2:37 So Beatrice is celebrating her birthday and she told friends and family to buy toys instead
2:42 of presents for her.
2:43 Right.
2:44 She had the generous idea of donating – or giving – the toys to a toy bank – a place
2:49 where toys are given away free to people in need.
2:53 The toy bank then distributed Beatrice's toys to parents who couldn't afford to buy presents
2:58 for their children at Christmas.
2:59 Yes.
3:00 So Beatrice is happy that children can benefit – or be helped by her.
3:05 She says she doesn't need presents.
3:07 A woman after your own heart, Neil!
3:10 Indeed!
3:11 And that means Beatrice has the same opinion as me!
3:13 Well, that's a great example of Christmas charity – and charity means giving free
3:18 help to people who need it.
3:20 Yes.
3:21 And here's another example, Neil.
3:22 Last year in London, twenty tons of presents were donated, wrapped, and delivered to a
3:28 local hospital to cheer up sick children who couldn't go home for Christmas.
3:33 Were they delivered in Santa's sleigh?
3:34 No Neil, they were delivered in a big double-decker bus!
3:39 Let's hear about the volunteers who made this happen.
3:43 Lots of different groups of people come together under the banner of kindness – so religious
3:47 people come together, corporate people come together, young people, old people – it
3:51 seems to be something that stretches across many many many different demographics.
3:56 Under the banner of kindness – what does that mean, Alice?
3:59 Well, being under the banner of something means being part of a group who are united
4:04 in support for an idea.
4:06 And in this case, different people came together to do something kind for sick children.
4:11 And demographics?
4:12 What's that?
4:13 Demographics means statistical information about a population and the groups of people
4:18 in it.
4:19 People from different groups in society are working together – the old and the young,
4:23 religious people, corporate – or business – people.
4:26 And this talk of kindness is making me feel more in the mood for Christmas!
4:30 I can see that, Ebenezer.
4:32 You've got a smile on your face!
4:35 Now, earlier in the show, I asked: At the end of the story, what does Scrooge buy the
4:40 Cratchit family for Christmas dinner?
4:43 Is it… a) a goose?
4:45 b) a turkey?
4:47 Or c) a chicken?
4:48 And I said a) a goose.
4:51 Yes.
4:52 And you were wrong, Neil!
4:53 The answer is b) a turkey.
4:57 That makes me a goose.
4:58 It certainly does.
4:59 Scrooge buys the Cratchit family the prize turkey hanging.
5:03 Delicious!
5:04 A Christmas Carol is a lovely story.
5:06 Everybody should read it.
5:08 And did you know that although turkeys are traditional Christmas food now, they weren't
5:12 in Dickens's time.
5:14 I see...
5:15 They were exotic back then – and that means unusual because it comes from another country.
5:20 The story was written in 1843.
5:23 Now how about hearing the words we learned today, Alice?
5:26 They are: a small fortune
5:29 grumpy, miser
5:31 eve, Santa Claus
5:34 donating, toy bank
5:37 benefit, after your own heart
5:41 charity, under the banner of something
5:44 demographics, exotic.

A trip to a new destination can be wonderful. However, the most basic problem you face is that you don't know anything about the place. So, how do you resolve this issue? Well, you have a lot of time on your flight or at the airport, right? Start a conversation with other passengers. Ask them about travel routes, cab services and the most popular tourist spots. In this lesson, we will tell you how to do that.

0:06 In this lesson you will learn how to talk to other passengers on a flight or at the airport.
0:17 Hey! I'm Mark. Are you on Continental 21?
0:23 Yup! Going to Las Vegas. I'm Sam by the way.
0:27 First time going there?
0:29 Nah! My uncle lives there. So I fly there quite often. Anything you want to know about Vegas?
0:35 Well...This is my first time. I don't really know much about the place.
0:40 Oh, don't worry. You're going to love it. No matter what your preferences are, Vegas has something for you.
0:47 That's good to hear! I'm staying at the Bellagio. Any good places around that area?
0:54 Are you kidding me? It's a hub of entertainment.
0:57 It's surrounded by luxurious hotels, huge casinos, delicious food and just about everything else you need.
1:04 Oh! Then I guess I made the right choice.
1:09 Sure did!
1:16 Hey, you look terrified. Everything alright?
1:19 I'm just afraid of planes. Besides that, everything is fine.
1:23 Oh! Take a deep breath. Let's talk and you can take your mind off the plane.
1:28 Well, I guess I can try that.
1:30 So, this is my first time to Las Vegas. I'm staying at the Bellagio. How do I get there?
1:36 Well, you need to take a cab. Just get off on terminal 3 and you will find a lot of them in that area.
1:42 Ok! No other options?
1:45 You could rent a car. Some rental companies have their stands around the airport. It might be cheaper.
1:51 Great. I'll do that I guess. By the way, we're already on the ground. I guess it did work out.
1:56 Seriously? Thanks.
2:05 Hey! Are you alright ? You look confused.
2:07 I've never been at an airport in my life. So I don't really know where I have to go first.
2:14 Well, for starters, where are you going?
2:16 I'm going to Las Vegas on Continental flight 21.
2:21 Ok! Let me see. First you need to check in at your airline's counter.
2:25 Yeah, I already did that. I got my boarding pass and checked my luggage.
2:30 Well, then you need to go through the security check.
2:33 Alrite. Anything after that?
2:36 Nothing much. Just go to your gate and wait for the boarding call.
2:40 Oh! That was easy. Thanks a lot.
2:49 Excuse me. I'm sorry but I couldn't help noticing that the book you're reading is really colorful.
2:56 It looks interesting. I'm Paula by the way.
3:00 Hi, Paula. I'm Angie. Well, it's a book for children. Do you like reading children's stories?
3:07 I think I read this one as a kid. It has stories of Brer Rabbit, doesn't it?
3:13 Yes, it does. It's by Enid Blyton.
3:17 Oh, I love Blyton! I've been reading her stories since I was 5.
3:22 Me too. Where are you flying to?
3:25 Quincy, California. What about you?
3:28 My goodness! I'm going there, too!
3:35 Well...This is my first time. I don't really know much about the place.
3:47 I'm staying at the Bellagio. Any good places around that area?
3:58 How do I get there?
4:03 I'm going to Las Vegas on Continental flight 21.
4:13 I've never been at an airport in my life. So I don't really know where I have to go first.
4:29 Excuse me. I'm sorry but I couldn't help noticing that the book you're reading is really colorful.

How to make a good small talk in English?
source: Learn English with Let's Talk 2014年4月28日
Take the test: http://www.learnex.in/how-to-make-a-s...
In most English-speaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make "small talk" in certain situations. Small talk is a casual form of conversation that "breaks the ice" or fills an awkward silence between people. Even though you may feel shy using your second language, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing. Just as there are certain times when small talk is appropriate, there are also certain topics that people often discuss during these moments.
Watch the lesson for better understanding of small talk. The hardest part about making small talk is knowing how to start a conversation. Review the conversation starters in the video and practise them with a friend. Finally, take the time to see how much you have learned about small talk by taking the test at the end of the video. And remember, in an English-speaking environment it is often better to make a few mistakes than to say nothing at all!
How to Improve your English Vocabulary
source: Espresso English 2012年12月30日
Visit http://www.espressoenglish.net for English tips and intensive English courses.
Did you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them - so when you want to use a particular word in conversation, you can't remember it at that moment. How annoying!
Does this ever happen to you?
The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and memorizing the words - but this is NOT effective (unless you naturally have a very good memory!)
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is... Learn new words and USE them immediately!
You can do this with a very simple exercise.
