Multi-word verbs are verbs that combine with one or two particles (a preposition and/or an adverb), for example:
1. We employ extra staff at Christmas.
(take on) We take on extra staff at Christmas.
2. She produced several excellent ideas.
(come up with) She came up with several excellent ideas.
3. He gained control of the company.
(take over) He took over the company.
4. The economy is improving.
(pick up) The economy is picking up.
5. The demand for our product is decreasing.
(fall off) The demand for our product is falling off.
6. The government has withdrawn from the project.
(back out of) The government has backed out of the project.
7. The company has temporarily dismissed three hundred workers.
(lay off) The company has laid off three hundred workers.
8. The plan to build another airport was abandoned.
(fall through) The plan to build another airport fell through.
9. Her ideas have become really popular.
(catch on) Her ideas have really caught on.
