0:07 In this lesson you will learn about ‘say’ and ‘tell’ and how to use them in your conversations.
0:20 When we say something, it doesn’t need to be to a specific person.
0:24 It just means that you are speaking. “That’s what everybody is saying.” In this phrase, everybody is saying something, but not to any specific person.
0:34 We can also use “say” to report things, such as “He said that he was on time.”
0:41 Right. But we always tell something to someone, like telling your daughter a story.
0:46 Yes! And you can also use “tell” to report things: “He told her he was on time”.
0:55 We use “tell” to give facts and information to someone. For example, let me tell you something, Nina: I got the grade I needed!
1:06 Congratulations Max! I knew you’d pass. Now why don’t you tell me more about the difference between say and tell?
1:15 That’s pretty much what there is to it, Nina. Let’s listen to some conversations for more examples.
1:27 Hey, I heard you got a new job.
1:30 Yes, who told you? Did Max tell you I got a new job?
1:36 Yes, Max told me that.
1:39 Trust Max to quickly spread the news around. What else did he say?
1:44 He said that you got a 30% raise too.
1:47 Yeah! I am so happy!
1:50 You deserve it! I can’t wait to tell Cynthia.
2:00 Hey John, I have a secret to tell you.
2:02 Tell me! I love secrets and gossips.
2:06 Well, Max said that he would ask his new girlfriend to marry him.
2:10 Max really told you that?
2:13 Yes, he told me that he had got a promotion at work, so he could marry her.
2:16 That's incredible. Anne said she had seen him with another girl just last week.
2:22 Oops, maybe he's a player. Don't tell anyone then!
2:25 I won't tell anybody. Better to let them sort it out themselves.
2:29 Never tell a secret; it will always come back to haunt you.
2:38 Hey Karen, did you see the new action movie at the cinema?
2:42 No, the critics said it was bad.
2:44 Oh, they always say that. They also said Mission Impossible was bad, but it was good.
2:50 So, about the new movie. Tell me about it.
2:53 I have to say it is a good movie, but too much action and not enough story.
2:57 Tell me, who went with you?
2:59I took Elizabeth. She told me she didn't like action films, but I took her anyway.
3:04 Did she like it?
3:06 No, she was bored. She got on her phone and messaged her friends all through the movie.
3:11 That’s irritating. Didn’t you tell her to stop?
3:14 No, I didn’t. I wanted to focus on the movie, so I didn’t say anything.
3:21 Did Max tell you I got a new job?
3:26 What else did he say?
3:30 I can’t wait to tell Cynthia.
3:36 Hey John, I have a secret to tell you.
3:41 Well, Max said that he would ask his new girlfriend to marry him.
3:50 Anne said she had seen him with another girl just last week.
3:58 Oh, they always say that.
