1: COME UP (WITH)
If something HAS COME UP, this means that something has happened.
- I have to cancel the meeting. Something has come up.
To come up with an idea or a plan means to think about an idea or a plan.
- we need to come up with a better strategy for this year
- I need to constantly come up with new ideas for you!
2: LAY OFF
This is similar to fire or to sack. But it suggests that it's because of the company's fault.
- I think they are going to lay off a bunch of people soon
- I was laid off last month (passive)
- I think I might be laid off soon
3: RUN BY/PAST
This means to ask for approval or an opinion on an idea/strategy.
- When I came up with new ideas, I had to run them by my boss first
- I ran my ideas by my coworkers too
- Can I run my business idea past you later?
- Run it by me first
4: TURN DOWN
This means to reject.
- I turned down promotion in 2007
- I can't believe they turned down our offer
5: TALK OVER
This means to discuss something.
- I'll need to talk it over with my coworkers
